40 Hour Basic Mounted Patrol Course

Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for mounted patrol officers in the areas of horsemanship and law enforcement mounted patrol tactics. It will provide students with a thorough understanding of the responsibilities and use of the mounted patrol unit, horse care and grooming, appropriate tack and equipment, use and limitations of the mounted patrol unit.

Registration Information:

Registration is $525.00 when completed by April 5, 2024. Any payment received after April 5, 2024 will increase to $550.00.

Registration will open on February 7, 2024. Positions in the class are reserved 90% sworn, 10% non-sworn from February 7th until 30 days before the course begins (April 7, 2024). At this time the entire course roster will be filled from the waiting list until the course roster is at capacity.

The fee includes a stall for the week and lunch provided Tuesday - Friday and dinner one night.

The course schedule, which is subject to change, is:

Tuesday / Wednesday: 0800 – 1700

Thursday: 0900 – 2100

Friday: 0900 - 1500

Saturday: 0800 – 1200

Please note that check-in is Monday May 6, 2024 from 1500-1700 or Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 0730 for those not overnighting with us.

Camping: Limited dry camping is available onsite at no charge. There are shower and

bathroom facilities onsite. Camping can be arranged by contacting Jd Cooper at

cooperwsmoa@gmail.com.

Course Confirmation: All registered students, meeting the minimal requirements, will receive a confirmation letter including additional logistical information and equipment requirements.

By applying, the student has affirmed that they and their mount have met all requirements of their unit and are fit for duty with appropriate and safe equipment.

Registered participants who cancel two or more weeks before the first training day will be assessed a 25% fee. Absent extreme hardship, no refunds will be given less than two weeks before the first training day. Persons/ organizations/ agencies reporting an extreme hardship shall appeal in writing to the WSMOA Board of Directors. As an option for cancellation, registration fees may be transferred to another member of the same organization.

If there is a waiting list for a particular course, applicants for student/horse combinations who have previously and successfully completed that same course will be encouraged to enroll in the next appropriate course or may be moved to the waiting list.
